Giorgio La Pira (Pozzallo, Italia 1904-Firenze, Italia 1977) è stato l’indimenticato sindaco di Firenze, ancora oggi ricordato in tutto il mondo per il suo instancabile servizio alla pace e all’unità fra i popoli.

La sua è stata un’eccezionale personalità, che ha coniugato il cristianesimo con il valore di realizzazioni tangibili.
La Pira è riuscito così a declinare la vocazione politica in servizio concreto alla sua amata città e al mondo intero, rendendo credibile l’idea di una sola famiglia umana.

Il 15 Novembre scorso si è tenuto a Firenze un convegno per iniziativa della Fondazione La Pira, che ha ricordato l’incontro tra il “sindaco santo” e Léopold Sédar Senghor, poeta della negritudine e presidente del Senegal.

Per l’occasione Maurizio Certini, direttore del Centro Internazionale Giorgio La Pira di Firenze, ha rilasciato un’intervista che offre una chiave di lettura attuale sulla città e sui rapporti tra Africa e Europa nella visione di questi due testimoni di fraternità.
